57495 (2025). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety: Has WorkSafe New Zealand conducted, or is it planning to conduct, any investigations into possible asbestos contamination of play sand products; if so, when and where?

Hon Brooke van Velden: I am advised that WorkSafe New Zealand played a key role in identifying this issue, and it continues to work with agencies and experts as part of the cross-government response. WorkSafe's inspectorate is engaging with suppliers and businesses, to support them to identify and manage the disposal of these products and decontamination of their workplaces. Formal investigation into an unsafe consumer product is not within WorkSafe's regulatory responsibilities.
