56375 (2025). Tangi Utikere to the Minister for Rail: What advice has been received on the likely future availability of alternative marine fuels in New Zealand, given that the ferries’ engines are designed to use them but such fuels are not currently available at scale?
Rt Hon Winston Peters: Ferry Holdings and KiwiRail is continually monitoring alternative marine fuel technology and supply chain options, similar to other transport operators who are seeking to reduce overall transport costs and emissions. The ferries arrive in 2029 and will be operational for 30 years, providing opportunity for alternative fuel supplies to be available at the scale required.
