55999 (2024). Steve Abel to the Minister for Resources: What data, if any, is kept on the annual emissions from coal mining?
Hon Shane Jones: The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment publishes Energy sector greenhouse gas emissions, including emissions from coal mining, here: https://www.mbie.govt.nz/building-and-energy/energy-and-natural-resources/energy-statistics-and-modelling/energy-statistics/new-zealand-energy-sector-greenhouse-gas-emissions.
All coal miners producing over 2,000t of coal per annum are required to be participants in the Emissions Trading Scheme under the Climate Change Response Act 2002. Therefore, the Environmental Protection Authority must hold the participants returns and publishes summaries of these here: https://www.epa.govt.nz/industry-areas/emissions-trading-scheme/ets-reports/.
The Ministry for the Environment is responsible for reporting annual emissions under the Paris Agreement and this can be found here: https://environment.govt.nz/publications/new-zealands-greenhouse-gas-inventory-1990-2022/ with an interactive tracker here: https://emissionstracker.environment.govt.nz/.
