55964 (2024). Ingrid Leary to the Minister for Mental Health: Does he agree with Mental Health Foundation chief executive Shaun Robinson that “Right now, there’s all this gung-ho, half-baked rhetoric about police pulling out within particular timeframes – and just assuming the health system has got the capacity to pick up the slack. Which is completely out of touch with reality” and if not, why not?
Hon Matt Doocey: I am advised health agencies are working closely with Police to change some of the ways agencies respond to mental health call outs. The change will see an increased health-led response, enabling Police support to be focused on where it is most important. I am further advised Police will continue to respond to health sector requests for assistance involving an immediate risk to life and safety – just as they always have.
