55886 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: What analysis and/or research, if any, was undertaken by dietetic leads to determine that toast is 'nutritionally sub-optimal' at Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley?
Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that dietetic leaders at Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley have not determined that bread is sub-optimal nutrition; rather they noted that an over reliance on bread would be sub-optimal. This references the importance of providing a variety of food in line with the Capital And Coast Menu Specifications, which were developed in consultation with stakeholders some years ago. These specifications detail what food service providers need to supply for hospital patients, including those who have specific dietary requirements for their clinical conditions and personal preferences.
