55693 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: Does Health New Zealand have any standards, policies or processes that determine the number of doctors on an emergency department roster?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that Health New Zealand is guided by standards from the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine. I am further advised that the current methodology for ED staffing in New Zealand varies by district to enable individual hospitals to apply their resources in the most effective way possible. I am also advised that the Medical Council of New Zealand also performs regular accreditation visits and can make recommendations for staffing as it impacts of trainee doctors.
