55690 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: Does Health New Zealand have any standards, policies or processes that determine the number of doctors and their seniority or experience for staffing an emergency department?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that two processes determine staffing in Emergency Departments (EDs). Firstly, Health New Zealand is guided by standards from the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine. In addition, Health NZ also uses Variance Response Management (VRM) to adapt staffing shift by shift; reassigning staff to meet health needs across hospital sites.
