55072 (2025). Rachel Boyack to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Are the new proposals to reduce risk from commercial fishing to Hoiho enough to ensure a self-sustaining thriving Hoiho, as is the vision of the five year action plan to by the Hoiho Governance and Technical Group?
Hon Shane Jones: I am advised that reducing fishing-related risk will not on its own address the decline in the northern mainland hoiho population. Malnutrition and predation are estimated to be primary factors of mortality, more so than fishing. Disease is also a significant factor.
Work is underway under Te Kaweka Takohaka mo te Hoiho Strategy to reduce all these sources of mortality.
