55070 (2025). Rachel Boyack to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Is he aware some Hoiho chicks fledge as far north as Canterbury, beyond the boundaries of the proposed measures to reduce risk from commercial fishing to Hoiho, and if so, does he intend to put in place measures to protect these Hoiho?
Hon Shane Jones: I am aware that hoiho range beyond the areas proposed to be closed to set netting. I am advised that the marine distribution of hoiho is often lower in these areas and there is considerably less overlap with set netting. To address the risk of captures in these areas my officials are currently consulting on an escalating response framework. This would see an immediate management response to any fishing related mortality of hoiho including, potentially, further area closures to fishing.
