54557 (2025). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: How many health and safety incident reports have been completed, if any, broken down by prison and role for the month ending 31 October 2025?
Hon Mark Mitchell: Corrections employs approximately 11,000 staff across a variety of different roles, with the overwhelming majority of Corrections’ staff working in frontline positions at many Community Corrections sites and 17 prisons across New Zealand. I am advised that Corrections encourages staff to lodge all health and safety incidents and has introduced a Health and Safety Reporting System to support this.
These incidents are then triaged and investigated where required. Reported incidents can vary in nature and would include smaller incidents such as stubbing a toe on a door frame or water on the ground. I refer the member to the attached table, which provides the number of health and safety incident reports completed in October 2025, broken down by prison. I am further advised that in order to protect the privacy of staff members, a further breakdown by role has not been provided.
