54226 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Does the Minister stand by her spokesperson’s statement that “The minister has garnered broad cross-party agreement on changes to NCEA and has invited Ms Tinetti to ... provide feedback on the new curriculum”?

Hon Erica Stanford: Yes. I phoned the Member to advise her of a delay by two years to the roll out of NCEA level 2 and 3. The Member advised that she supported this change agreed to work collaboratively on future NCEA work. This has been the only NCEA change so far. When work starts on further NCEA changes I expect there will be further engagement. When we met in person, I suggested to the member the importance of cross-party agreement on major issues like NCEA and the Curriculum Refresh. I advised her of my concerted efforts to build on what had already been undertaken by the previous government. The member advised she agreed, particularly with regard to NCEA and she agreed with my position that our national qualification should not be political. On curriculum, the member noted in our meeting that she would like to see the draft curriculum refresh before engaging further. The maths and English curriculum were recently released for public consultation. I hope the member will provide feedback and agree the importance of cross-party commitment to the curriculum. I am aware that her colleague Hon Chris Hipkins has shared with principals the importance of cross-party commitment to the curriculum. So this is something she may also wish to discuss with her party leader.
