53843 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: How many sensitive claims (formerly known as historic abuse claims) lodged after the 9 May announcement about changes to the redress system, if any, have been closed at the Ministry of Education since the 9 May announcement; if none, why?
Hon Erica Stanford: None.
As the member will be aware, the Ministry of Education has a backlog of redress claims going back to the previous Government. As at 27 November 2025, approximately 55 claims are under assessment at various stages of the process (i.e. early research, interview, report-writing, drafting response). Some of these claims date back to as far as 2021. Claims granted ‘priority’ status for age or ill-health are moved to the top of the queue, regardless of when they were filed.
