53818 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: How many, if any, claims for abuse in care have been closed by Oranga Tamariki, broken down by six-montly periods since the 1 April 2017?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that they stood up an interim Claims service in January 2023. I am also advised that to provide the total claims for abuse in care that have been closed by Oranga Tamariki broken down in the requested format would require substantial collation and divert staff from their core duties. In accordance with Speakers’ Ruling 199-3, I consider that the time, and hence expense, of answering this question in the timeframe allowed for written parliamentary questions, is not in the public interest.
