53749 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Does the Minister agree with the President of the New Zealand Principals’ Federation, Leanne Otene, who said "The information being used to justify radical changes to the maths curriculum is based on misinformation"; if not, why not?
Hon Erica Stanford: No. The Curriculum Insights and Progress Study is reliable, and has evolved from the previous National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement (NMSSA). In addition this is not a “radical change” instead what is required at Year 8 in the draft curriculum statement for maths has substantial overlap with what is currently specified at Curriculum level 4. In other words, it describes much of the same content and ideas but in a more structured way.
