53317 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Lead Coordination Minister for the Government's Response to the Royal Commission’s Report into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions: How many, if any, historic abuse in care claims have been delayed while waiting for forms associated with the proposal to introduce a new process for survivors who have been sentenced to five years or more in prison for serious sexual and/or violent offences, listed by the historic claims process they applied to?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised that 16 survivors who lodged claims with the Ministry of Education out of 2,035 claims across all redress agencies received since the 9 May (0.8 percent) had a short delay to their claim being progressed whilst checking processes associated with this change were implemented.
No survivors have had their claims delayed in the Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Health or Oranga Tamariki as any assessment of their claims has been able to progress whilst checking processes were established.
In the publicly reported case regarding a terminally ill survivor and the Ministry of Health I am advised that this did not delay their claim as the claim was being progressed alongside the criminal check process.
