Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: Are there a total of 461 Year 1-8 schools and kura in New Zealand; if not, then why in May 2025 did the Minister say that “all Year 1-8 schools and kura are funded for a Learning Support Coordinator to work with students” when in September 2025 she said "From Term 1, 461 schools will have access to a new LSC staffing entitlement"?

Hon Erica Stanford: All state, state-integrated schools and kura with learners in Years 1-8 that do not currently have access to a Learning Support Coordinator (LSC) will have access to an in-school LSC by 2028. To clarify, this initiative will be rolled out over three years, and it provides around 649 new LSC full-time teacher equivalents (FTTE). 474 schools have been allocated an in-school LSC entitlement for 2026, 396 schools for 2027 and 261 schools for 2028. Please note these numbers are subject to change due to new and closing schools. Schools can view their FTTE entitlement, and the year they will receive it, under their regional school list at https://www.education.govt.nz/lsc All schools will receive a minimum of 0.2 FTTE. In-school LSCs are allocated at a ratio of 1 FTTE per 500 students, with a minimum of 0.2 FTTE.
