Hon Judith Collins: No. While as Attorney-General I have constitutional responsibility for the Government’s role in the administration of the criminal law, it is critical to our system of criminal law that there is no actual or perceived political interference in the performance or exercise of such functions and powers. Therefore, quite properly, I was not briefed on the approach that would be taken to name suppression for Jevon McSkimming. The Police or other public prosecutors, are responsible for the decisions made in criminal prosecutions, including name suppression. Crown solicitors may advise Police or other public prosectors or may take certain prosecutions for the Crown. All of those prosecutions are subject to the general oversight of the Solicitor-General, whose expectations are set out in the Solicitor-General Prosecution Guidelines.
