Steve Abel to the Associate Minister of Agriculture: What advice, if any, did the Minister receive about the legal implications, if any, of proposed changes setting new requirements for the use of farrowing crates, in light of the 2020 High Court ruling that the regulations for farrowing crates were unlawful and invalid under the Animal Welfare Act?

Hon Andrew Hoggard: Relevant advice I have received from the Ministry for Primary Industries on proposed new requirements for the use of farrowing crates has now been proactively released on the Ministry’s website: https://www.mpi.govt.nz/consultations/changes-to-the-code-of-welfare-for-pigs-and-associated-regulations. Where appropriate, advice has been withheld to maintain legal privilege.
