52517 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Does the Minister stand by her statement that “a vast majority of them needed to know that curriculum material in order to experience success at high school”; if so, does she agree that a vast majority of them needed to know that curriculum material in order to have success when tested against the curriculum benchmark?
Hon Erica Stanford: Yes, I stand by my statement that students need to know the curriculum material to experience success. This is why the learning areas are being strengthened with year-by-year guidance to provide greater clarity on what teachers need to teach and students need to learn from Years 0 to 13. What is required at Year 8 in the draft curriculum statement for maths has substantial overlap with what is currently specified at Curriculum level 4. In other words, it describes much of the same content and ideas but in a more structured way.
