52436 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Will all people wanting to train to become a teacher, including as an English, PE or a humanities teacher, be required to have at least NCEA Level 2 in mathematics?

Hon Erica Stanford: The Teaching Council has indicated that it will be consulting with Initial Teacher Education (ITE) providers, the teaching profession and other stakeholders on proposed changes to the entry requirements for ITE programmes for primary teaching. The Teaching Council has made it clear that its proposed requirements would not apply to secondary and early childhood education teaching programmes. This is also my response to written parliamentary question 52437 (2024).
