52404 (2024). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: Does she stand by her statement on the new mathematics programmes “Every single child in this country will have access to one of these programmes – schools can choose – there will be a number of providers they can choose.”; and if so, does "every child" include those enrolled in Home Education?
Hon Erica Stanford: As part of the Make it Count maths action plan, all Year 0-8 state and state-integrated schools and kura will have a choice of resources, including teacher-guides and student workbooks, to support their implementation of the new Year 0-8 maths and pāngarau curriculum. The Ministry of Education (the Ministry) will work with a range of providers to introduce these teacher-guides and student workbooks. The Make it Count maths action plan is for state and state-integrated schools and kura, which are required to use the National Curriculum (the New Zealand Curriculum or Te Marautanga o Aotearoa). It is the Year 0-8 children in these schools and kura that my statement referred to. Unless enrolled in Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu, New Zealand’s state distance education provider, students being home educated are not required to be taught through the National Curriculum. Home educators may choose to use the National Curriculum if they wish, and they have access to many free resources on Tāhūrangi, the Ministry’s curriculum website, at https://tahurangi.education.govt.nz/.
