52393 (2025). Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister for Biosecurity: What is the current situation regarding the health of honeybee populations in New Zealand, and how does this currently limit pollination services for crops and ecosystems?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: The annual New Zealand Colony Loss survey is commissioned by Biosecurity New Zealand and has been carried out for the last 10 years, tracking the health of our honeybee colonies. Colony loss rates in New Zealand are still low by international standards, and beekeepers tell us they are losing fewer colonies than they used to.
Beekeepers in New Zealand have grown a successful manuka honey export industry and continue to successfully pollinate exported horticultural crops.
