52366 (2025). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: How, if at all, does removing a requirement for school boards to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi align with the Government policies te Aka Maurea me te Maihi Karauna?

Hon Erica Stanford: Schools are still required to provide Māori language education, on the same basis that they were from 1989 to 2020. It is for the Crown to determine what school boards should do to enable the Crown to meet its Treaty obligations. I do not consider the removal of this ambiguous obligation, and its replacement by specific obligations, to be inconsistent with te Aka Maurea me te Maihi Karauna.
