52364 (2025). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: What Māori Historians, if any, were consulted as part of the draft New Zealand Histories Curriculum?
Hon Erica Stanford: History is a strand within the wider Social Sciences learning area. I am advised that, in developing the Social Sciences learning area, the Ministry of Education engaged a number of sector experts as part of the Contributing Group and Review Group processes. The make-up of these groups represent the expertise required across the learning area as a whole. When selecting members for these groups, experts were assessed against selection criteria that included experience and expertise of New Zealand context, including the use of te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and contexts specific to Pacific learners.
