52201 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for Economic Development: What teams, business units, and functions in the Minister’s departments, if any, have lost 30% or more FTEs since November 2023, and how many FTEs have they been reduced by?
Hon Melissa Lee: I am advised, MBIE’s FTE has decreased across all groups since November 2023 with the following numbers readily available. MBIE has reduced its FTE by 453.8 since 30 December 2023. This reduction reflects fully implemented savings initiatives (347.4 FTE) and includes natural workforce movement such as attrition, restricted recruitment, and secondments out. Table 1: Workforce comparison between December 2023 and June 2024 Full-time equivalent staff (FTE) 30 December 2023 6,650.3 30 June 2024 6,196.5 Confirmed workforce reduction -453.8 These decreases are a result of MBIE undertaking a number of initiatives to meet its overall fiscal savings objectives and align its workforce to ensure delivery of government priorities in a fiscally constrained environment. These initiatives include the ending of some work programmes (including Stop work notices, legislative repeal), closure of vacancies, restricting recruitment, offering voluntary redundancy, and a number of formal change processes. In some instances, where work programmes have ended and/or teams have been reconfigured to better deliver to the Government’s work programme, MBIE have reallocated staff and/or redeployed them in line with managing their change employment obligations. Further details of MBIE’s formal change processes are available in the change documents published its external website (www.mbie.govt.nz/about/open-government-and-official-information/release-of-information/mbie-departmental-change-processes). With regard to New Zealand Growth Capital Partners, I am advised that one sub-unit within NZGCP’s Aspire investment team has been disestablished – this consisted of the disestablishment of three roles (including one filled by a contractor).
