52171 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: How long are tenants given to move once a decision is made to sell the public house they live in and under what circumstances can exceptions be made?

Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that Regional Placement teams typically engage tenants in advance of issuing a 90-day notice to formalise a requirement to move. It is the notice that provides the timeframe in which the tenant will need to move by, in accordance with the Residential Tenancies Act. Exceptions may be made to this timeframe in some instances, for example, where the home is, or becomes, unsafe to reside in, or if there is an order from the Tenancy Tribunal.
