51738 (2025). Steve Abel to the Minister of Climate Change: What proportion, if any, of the new 2050 methane target is expected to come from emissions reductions in methane from organic waste compared to agriculture methane?
Hon Simon Watts: In New Zealand, approximately 92 per cent of biogenic methane emissions are produced by the agriculture sector, and 9 per cent by the waste sector.
Greenhouse gas emissions projections show reductions in waste sector methane emissions are expected to reduce by around 32% between 2017 and 2050. This represents around a 2.5 percentage point contribution to the new 2050 biogenic methane target (which will require a 14-24% reductions in biogenic methane emissions by 2050).
