51721 (2024). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: Which, if any, Māori medium education schools were using the Structured Literacy Approach as of the end of 2023, listed by school name?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised that the Ministry of Education does not hold sector-wide data on schools or kura using a structured literacy approach as at the end of 2023. However, between 13 May and 14 June 2024, a survey was undertaken of all settings where learning is through te reo Māori. This survey focused on whether Year 0-3 and Year 4-6 kaiako had been trained in, or were using, structured te reo matatini approaches, known as Rangaranga Reo ā-Tā. 149 of the 274 survey recipients responded. Of those 149, 97 (65 percent) had engaged in some form of professional learning development (PLD) for structured te reo matatini. The remaining 52 recipients indicated that they were open to engaging in PLD for structured te reo matatini approaches. I refer the Member to the attached table, listing schools and kura that teach in Māori medium settings that had engaged in structured literacy PLD at the time of the survey.
