50156 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: What policy, if any, does Kāinga Ora follow to determine whether or not to board up a vacant house and who, if anyone, approves the decision to board up a house?
Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities advises me that a property may be boarded up to make the home secure when appropriate, for example, major repairs, fire damage, retrofitting, or prior to demolition. Guidance to staff and appropriate approval for action differs based on the reason for the action, however, the key focus for any such activity to is to make the home secure and to mitigate risks.
