49898 (2024). Hon Dr Deborah Russell to the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology: What specific ways does the Minister envision Australia’s Gene Technology Act 2000 be modified to work in New Zealand?
Hon Judith Collins: Australia's Gene Technology Act will be adapted in three main ways: 1. Introducing a dedicated process to consider Māori rights and interests 2. Incorporating changes from reviews of the Australian Act, such as introducing three separate categories to assess environmental releases, medical uses, and laboratory uses respectively to account for the different risks each pose. 3. Updating administrative provisions to reflect New Zealand practice, such as for compliance and enforcement.
