49883 (2024). Ingrid Leary to the Minister for Mental Health: Does the Minister agree with the Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora He Arotake: Te Aka Whai Ora Suicide Prevention and Postvention Review (July 2024) that there were non-Māori staff lacking cultural capability when working with Māori whānau, including experiences of profound cultural misunderstanding and racism; if so, what, if anything, will he do to address this?
Hon Matt Doocey: I am aware of the recommendations contained in He Arotake: Te Aka Whai Ora Suicide Prevention and Postvention Review. These findings will be considered in the development of the next suicide prevention action plan for the 2025–2029 period. I am advised that training and development opportunities grounded in te ao Māori and mātauranga Māori continue to be available to Health New Zealand mental health staff to help address workforce needs regarding cultural capability.
