Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: What reports, briefings, emails, memos, aides-memoire, notes or written advice, if any, has the Minister and/or her Office received and/or sent regarding the 'Make it Count' maths action plan and the effect this could have on neurodiverse students; listed by agency, title and date received/sent?

Hon Erica Stanford: I have not received any specific briefings or modelling regarding the Make it Count maths action plan and the effect this could have on neurodiverse students from the Ministry of Education. As set out in my answer to written parliamentary question 49866 (2024), Make it Count broadly aligns with the areas of focus set out in the Literacy & Communication and Maths Strategy developed by the previous Government with wide input, including from the disability community. The draft maths curriculum, which is currently out for feedback, brings together in one document previous work on the draft learning area and common practice model (including a detailed maths teaching sequence) which had been developed with input from members of the disability community, including neurodivergent perspectives. My priorities around curriculum and pedagogy have been clearly signaled in my priority areas 1 and 2 around the curriculum refresh and effective pedagogy for early numeracy and literacy. The Teaching Council has indicated that it will be consulting with Initial Teacher Education (ITE) providers, the teaching profession and other stakeholders on these proposed changes to the entry requirements for ITE programmes for primary teaching. The Teaching Council has also indicated that its consultation would begin formally later this month. This is also my response to written parliamentary questions 49875 (2024).
