Hon Erica Stanford: Corrected reply: I am advised by the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) that the Make it Count maths action plan broadly aligns with the areas of focus set out in the Literacy & Communication and Maths Strategy. This strategy and its companion, Hei Raukura Mō te Mokopuna (the strategy for te reo matatini and pāngarau), were informed by wide engagement with the sector and experts, as well as evidence such as the 2021 Royal Society Te Apārangi Expert Advisory Panel on Mathematics and Statistics report Pāngarau Mathematics and Tauanga Statistics in Aotearoa New Zealand. No additional consultation was undertaken specifically on Make it Count. There will be consultation where appropriate, as actions are progressed. For example, the draft maths and pāngarau Year 0 to 8 curriculum documents are currently out for feedback until 6 September 2024. My priorities around curriculum and pedagogy have been clearly signaled in my priority areas 1 and 2 around the curriculum refresh and effective pedagogy for early numeracy and literacy. The Teaching Council has indicated that it will be consulting with Initial Teacher Education (ITE) providers, the teaching profession and other stakeholders on these proposed changes to the entry requirements for ITE programmes for primary teaching. The Teaching Council has also indicated that its consultation would begin formally later this month.
