49840 (2025). Teanau Tuiono to the Prime Minister: What assurances, if any, can the Minister give that the Government’s new Defence Industry Strategy will not undermine New Zealand’s moral standing by enabling the export of weapons that could be used in international conflicts and result in human rights abuses?
Rt Hon Christopher Luxon: New Zealand is committed to being a responsible exporter, and our export control regime is an essential element of our policies to this end. Our regime, administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, is designed to ensure that any exports of controlled goods, such as weapons and other defence-related items, are consistent with our wider policy, including our human rights and international humanitarian law obligations.
