49615 (2024). Ricardo Menéndez March to the Associate Minister of Housing: Does the Ministry of Social Development, since this coalition government assumed office in 2023, track where people go to when they leave emergency housing; and if so, what is the current situation of these people broken down by gender, ethnicity, and region?

Hon Tama Potaka: I am advised by the Ministry of Social Development (the Ministry) that formal reporting on where people go when they leave emergency housing (EH) is still under development. Between December 2023 and June 2024, the total number of households living in emergency housing has fallen from 3141 to 2133 – a 32 per cent reduction in just six months. The Ministry’s understanding of where people go when they exit emergency housing has improved during this government’s term with MSD now able to discern high-level housing outcomes for 78% of households that exited emergency housing over the period. I am advised by the Ministry that of the households that exited emergency housing during the period, 27 percent left EH to go into Social Housing, 21 percent had moved into Transitional Housing and 28 percent were receiving the Accommodation Supplement for a private rental. I am also advised that between April and July 2024, 540 households with children have been moved into social housing tenancies via the Priority One fast-track. That represents over 1,100 children who no longer have to live in unsuitable motels. I refer the member to the attached table.
