48615 (2025). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: What steps, if any, is he taking to strengthen identity verification requirements for online vehicle registration and ownership transfers?

Hon Chris Bishop: NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advise me that it has a programme of work underway to strengthen security and privacy measures across a range of transactions, including changing the registered person on a vehicle. This programme plans a number of potential improvements to identity controls over the next two years. This includes leveraging other government services, such as verified RealMe, to ensure transactions are linked to a validated government identity.
