48612 (2025). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: What coordination mechanisms, if any, currently exist between NZTA and New Zealand Police to detect and respond to fraudulent vehicle registration activity, and what improvements, if any, are planned?

Hon Chris Bishop: I am advised NZTA maintains a close working relationship with the NZ Police at both national and local levels. Where either party identifies potential criminal activity (e.g. vehicle inspection, fraudulent documentation, stolen vehicles), each entity collaborates to investigate and resolve the matter. NZTA continuously monitors the vehicle subsystem as part of its core functions and undertakes preparatory policy work when opportunities for system improvement are identified. NZTA also has a programme of work underway to strengthen security and privacy measures across a range of transactions, including those related to fraudulent vehicle registration activity. As part of this programme, NZTA has established a working group with NZ Police and other government agencies to identify and progress improvements aimed at preventing fraudulent vehicle registration.
