48609 (2025). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: What coordination, if any, exists between NZTA, Customs, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to ensure consumer protection and road safety in relation to damaged or written-off caravan imports?
Hon Chris Bishop: I am advised there is no formal coordination between NZTA, Customs, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment specific to damaged or written-off caravan imports. Under the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Standards Compliance 2002 (Rule 35001/2002)—light trailers and caravans are not required to undergo border inspection or entry certification. As a result, NZTA does not inspect these vehicles at the border.
