Hon Simon Watts: The Local Electoral Act outlines the duties and responsibilities of an electoral officer. Councils typically contract private companies to manage election logistics, including vote processing and candidate information. Councils also appoint the electoral officers who have responsibility for conducting the elections, and ensuring legislative requirements are met. I would expect all councils to have clear performance expectations, and reporting requirements, for contracts to deliver election services, including ensuring that there are strong quality control processes in place. The Local Electoral Act also provides a process for candidates or electors to file a petition to the District Court if they have a complaint about the conduct of an election or poll.
