48112 (2024). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: What modelling has the Ministry of Education done on the teacher supply impact of the Teaching Council raising the bar for entry to initial teacher education to achieving 14 credits at level 2 NCEA maths?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised by the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) that the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (the Council) is responsible for setting entry requirements for initial teacher education.
The Council is proposing changes to entry requirements to Primary teacher education programmes, and will consult on this in late August 2024. The change would be effective with approved transitional arrangements from 2025.
The Ministry will analyse the impact on teacher supply when the Council shares its proposal for consultation, and the policy parameters are clear.
