Celia Wade-Brown to the Minister of Local Government: What advice has the Minister received, if any, about any sanctions or disciplinary processes or other instruments, that might be imposed on a Council that does not comply with either rescinding their decision to introduce a Māori ward or holding a poll?

Hon Simeon Brown: As the Minister of Local Government, I have received advice from the Department of Internal Affairs that councils that do not comply with the requirement to either reverse the decision to introduce a Māori ward or hold a poll would be in breach of the Local Electoral Act 2001. I have also received initial advice on potential options to deal with issues around non-compliance. I expect all councils to comply with their legal obligations.
