46527 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What measures, if any, is the Minister taking to address current staffing shortages?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I have sought and received assurances that Corrections officials are continuing in their efforts to employ more staff. Corrections’ recruitment campaign is ongoing and I am advised that hiring and training frontline staff remains a top priority. I am further advised that more than 26,000 applications for frontline roles have been received since the launch of Corrections’ refreshed recruitment campaign on 4 February 2024. Corrections’ advertising reaches a wide audience across the country in order to reach and attract talent that matches the community they serve. Corrections also works with a range of staff networks and specialised media suppliers that help Corrections engage with diverse communities to make sure they are represented in Corrections’ staff. The recruitment process for frontline staff is typically 10-12 weeks as Corrections undertakes a rigorous recruitment process to ensure people meet the requirements for the role.
