45907 (2025). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety: Has any modelling been done on how much sick leave a full-time worker would receive, on average, under her proposal to replace the Holidays Act 2003; if so, what did the modelling find?

Hon Brooke van Velden: Sick leave will accrue from day one in direct proportion to workers' contracted hours, at the rate of 0.0385 hours per contracted hour of work. A full-time worker with 40 contracted hours per week would accrue 80 hours of sick leave per year. Statistics NZ defines full-time employment as working 30 hours or more per week. Data from Statistics NZ indicates that working 40 hours per week is the most common full-time working arrangement in New Zealand (Household Labour Force Survey, 2025 Q2).
