45701 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: When, if at all, did the Minister ask NZQA to begin looking at the feasibility of using AI to mark internal and external assessments; by date?

Hon Erica Stanford: NZQA has been trialling the use of AI for assessment since 2019. This work was initiated by the agency as part of its broader innovation and digital transformation programme, and not in response to a specific ministerial directive. This work led to a trial and pilot of Automated-Text scoring for the NCEA literacy writing assessment in 2024. In 2025, this technology was implemented for use in these assessments.
