45514 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: Further to 33023 (2025), why was the Oranga Tamariki Child Protection Investigation Unit investigating harm to children not in the care of Oranga Tamariki when the stated objective of the Unit was to conduct rigorous and transparent investigations into cases where the care provided to a child by the state has caused harm?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that since it was announced in November 2024, the purpose of the Child Protection Investigation Unit has been refined. The Acting Chief Executive and Director of the Child Protection Investigation Unit agreed that the Unit would consider investigations of serious harm to children and young people both in care and children and young people known to Oranga Tamariki.
