45505 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: What, if anything, has the Oranga Tamariki Child Protection Investigation Unit done to achieve its objective of ensuring the experiences of survivors of abuse in care inform ongoing improvements in care standards?
Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that in response to the findings and recommendations from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions, the Child Protection Investigation Unit is focusing on ensuring that current care is safe. I am further advised that since it was announced in November 2024, the purpose of the Child Protection Investigation Unit has been refined to focus on the experiences of children and young people in care and those known to Oranga Tamariki. The findings and any recommendations made as a result of the Unit’s investigations have the potential to inform ongoing improvements to care.
