45475 (2025). Lemauga Lydia Sosene to the Minister responsible for Ministerial Services: Were any Ministers self-drive cars involved in accidents between November 2023 and August 2025, and if so, which Ministers and on what date(s) were the accidents?
Rt Hon Christopher Luxon: I’m advised by the Department of Internal Affairs that since 27 November 2023, there have been three incidents reported involving Ministerial self-drive vehicles. In each case, the reported incidents were caused by a third-party. Each Minister has the use of a self-drive car at their discretion. As part of this discretion, any holder of a valid New Zealand driver’s licence may drive the self-drive vehicle with the eligible users permission. As such the Minister may not have been driving the vehicle at the time of an incident. For privacy reasons the Department of Internal Affairs does not release the name of individuals involved in these incidents.
