45190 (2025). Hon Marama Davidson to the Minister of Internal Affairs: How many children, on average, as a percentage of the total, are adopted into New Zealand from countries on the Adoption Amendment Act's exemption list each year?
Hon Brooke van Velden: Between 2020 and 2025, a total of 10 per cent of children registered for New Zealand citizenship by descent following an adoption overseas, were adopted in countries that are on the Adoption Amendment Act 2025 exemption list. During that period, the Department of Internal Affairs (the Department) received a total of 2693 registrations of citizenship by descent following an overseas adoption. A total of 262 registrations came from countries on the exempt list. These figures reflect children who have registered citizenship through the Department, and do not include the immigration pathway for those over 14 years of age.
