45144 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: Does Kāinga Ora allow tenants to take in boarders and if so, do family members contributing to household costs of living count as boarders?

Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities advises me that boarders are allowed in its homes, provided that the additional person/people in the home does not lead to the home being overcrowded. If Kāinga Ora becomes aware of any change in household composition, including a boarder, the tenant is asked to notify the Ministry of Social Development to note their change in circumstances.
