Hon Louise Upston: The Government recognises the important role that events play in delivering sustained economic benefits to regional communities. Through the Events Attraction Package and Events Boost Fund, I have set clear expectations for supported events, including the delivery of a strategic and ambitious schedule that complements New Zealand’s existing events calendar. Consideration will be given to geographic spread and seasonal balance to ensure a diverse portfolio that benefits a wide range of regions. There is strong evidence that large events deliver lasting economic value to regional communities. Events supported through the Major Events Fund are subject to cost-benefit analysis both before and after delivery, providing robust national and regional data on their economic impact. For example, the inaugural ITM Taupō Super400 in 2024 generated $5.8 million in local spend, with over 3,000 international visitors contributing to 22,000 room nights. In 2025, the ITM Taupō Super440 attracted more than 51,000 attendees, resulting in 36,000 room nights and increased demand across hundreds of local businesses. These events deliver sustained benefits by driving repeat visitation, supporting business growth, creating ongoing employment, and elevating Taupō’s international profile—evidenced by over 3,000 media reports, a cumulative audience of seventy million, and broadcast reach across 128 countries.
